Diarrhea is classified as very soft or completely runny stool that does not self correct within 24 hours or presents with other symptoms, such as fever, lethargy, going off feed, teeth grinding or hunched belly that indicate discomfort/pain and isolating from the herd, to name a few.

Herbal remedies can be very effective for this, including slippery elm, “the spicies” of turmeric, ginger, cayenne, cinnamon and garlic, and commercial formulas such as Fir Meadow GI Soother.

Let’s delve into this topic and look at causes, solutions and prevention.

“In adult ruminants, diarrhea is more likely to develop due to maldigestion and malabsorption secondary to infectious enteritis, whereas osmotic diarrhea is likely to develop secondary to carbohydrate engorgement.”

Important differential diagnoses for infectious enteritis can be broadly classified into bacterial (salmonellosis, paratuberculosis, and Clostridium perfringens type A), viral (bovine viral diarrhea [BVD]virus, malignant catarrhal fever, and bovine coronavirus [BCoV]), and parasitic (coccidiosis and nematodiasis).” An in-depth discussion of each follows.
