Reply To: Iron
Doug from Free Choice Enterprises had this to say about iron:
“Iron is an element necessary for green plants to preform photosynthesis, therefore it is very rarely deficient in the diet. More often it tends to be in excess.
The effects of an iron deficiency will be weakness and fatigue due to anemia, decreased milk flow, and decreased conversion of non-protein nitrogen into amino acids.
Parasites have a very high requirement for iron therefore causing it to be deficient. In the past, we observed that if we found animals that were consuming Iron feed free choice, further test would show high levels of parasites.
If the customer thinks Iron may be deficient we do have it available for purchase. However, if the animals are consuming iron I have found that there is generally a parasite issue every time.
In these cases it is better for the animals to receive treatment for parasites then just supplementing more Iron.”
