We have fed alfalfa as the sole hay ration for 15 years. This year, I intend to try feeding both grass hay and alfalfa hay separately free choice. Michaiah has done this for years and says, “We offer grass hay that’s around 16% protein and alfalfa hay 18-25% protein. They tend to eat alfalfa in a 2:1 ratio to grass hay. Between the two their hay protein intake is way higher than the protein level of an alfalfa grass mix hay.”
