I’m working through Tisserand’s Essential Oil Safety again as I continue my studies on essential oils and their uses in goats. This is such an important point to underscore:
When we isolate a single constituent, we get different results than when we use the whole. (Think pharmaceuticals too, where a constituent of a medicinal plant will be extracted, tested and either used with other extracted ingredients or found to be “unsafe,” such as is the case with comfrey.)
Melissa Shelton of The Animal Desk Reference, a veterinarian’s perspective on EO use in animals talks repeatedly about the enhanced benefits of blending oils rather than using them singly.
The study they’re quoting here shows that adding clove to cinnamon, both hot oils, reduced the reaction vs. when cinnamon was applied by itself.
We need to learn so much more in these fields, but this is a good reminder to carefully explore the synergies you can find when combining multiple oils at safe levels.
