Conjunctivitis and Pinkeye

Conjunctivitis and pinkeye are inflammatory conditions of the eye and are quickly and easily resolved using colloidal silver.  This is the only remedy I use for any and all eye conditions.  It won’t hurt, promotes blood flow and healing, and has an antibiotic effect against the various agents that can be implicated in eye infections.

Here is a doe kid who presented with a cloudy eye.

Right eye, clouded, pink, weepy and inflamed.
Left eye shows none of the symptoms of the right.

You can see in the two images the comparison between the good eye and the cloudy, pink, inflamed eye. It doesn’t matter what the cause is, because I know from experience colloidal silver will handle virtually every case of eye inflammation I’ve thrown it at.

Treatment is 2-3 drops of colloidal silver in the affected eye twice daily until 2-3 days past last symptoms. As you can see in the image below, you can accomplish this with a sterile syringe if you don’t have a bottle with a dropper.

To administer, aim toward the corner of the eye, quickly place 2-3 drops and let the animal blink and react naturally.  The blinking will disperse the silver throughout the affected eye. You will likely see improvement within 8 hours, though some cases may require a few doses to show noticeable improvement.  In this particular case, she was almost back to normal that evening but I continued giving her drops for 2 or 3 more days to be sure the source of the inflammation was completely eliminated.

Other Treatment Options

In Katherine A. Drovdahl’s book The Accessible Pet, Equine and Livestock Herbal, she recommends a combination of cayenne powder and marshmallow root (or chickweed/calendula/slippery elm) made into a small strong tea, strained through sterile cloth.  Flush the affected eyes with this tea.  She states, “Cayenne really works WELL.”

My note:  bear in mind that it will sting greatly as well – cayenne has no sensory impact on cuts and scrapes, but does powerfully impact mucous membranes.

A common folk remedy is fresh raw goat milk dropped directly in the eye.  Members report excellent results with this method.

Juliette says in The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable:

The raw juice of cucumbers squeezed into the eyes is my own chosen remedy, learnt from the Arabs.
